It is a known fact that television sets have evolved much over the years. Consumers now want high definition images on their television screen. The mid 1990s saw the proliferation of HDTV into the market. This was good, because HDTV provides consumers with clearer images that are high definition. However, there was a lack of a good and cheap way of recording and replaying high definition content because no storage medium can be found that will be able to store that kind of data. It was known, though, that using blue lasers of shorter wavelengths can produce optical storage with a higher density.

This was how the high definition DVD started, through the use of blue lasers and the proliferation of HDTV in Japan and the United States. High definition DVD is an evolution of the standard DVD format. It's better with regard to its audio and video quality, as well as the capability to store so much more data. The demand for a storage medium that can display high definition images prompted the birth of the high definition DVD.

The high definition DVD can store approximately 3 1/2 times more data than the standard DVD because it uses blue lasers with shorter wavelengths. This means that it has a maximum capacity of 30 GB instead of the usual 8.5 GB capacity of standard DVDs.

High definition DVD players are needed to play the high definition DVD. These high definition DVD players work better with the high definition DVDs. Some high definition DVD players can also act as a recorder of scenes playing on HDTVs. The good thing about this is the DVD player can also play almost all kinds of discs, so a consumer would have no problem at all with playing standard DVDs on the high definition DVD players.

The companies engaged in the replication of DVDs also need not worry. DVD replication companies can go on utilizing their current production equipment and will need to do only minor alterations when they have to change over to the format of high definition DVD replication.

There are also high definition DVD recorders that can function not only with a HDTV, but also with a computer. Compatibility with a computer was made for high definition DVD recorders because of the lifestyle change of users. Consumers nowadays would like to have the convenience of viewing and transferring videos, photos or movies anywhere in their home. This makes the high definition DVD player and recorder a practical choice among consumers.

High definition DVD players also provide quality playbacks of MP3s and CDs, and are also compatible with WMA format. The sound that these players provide is also excellent. They also have different on-screen menu functions, parental controls, progressive scan, digital photo viewer, instant skip and instant replay.

For those who want to purchase a high definition DVD player, they must make certain that the one they will get has already been attached with all the needed accessories such as the digital virtual interface jacks. Buyers who are getting high definition DVDs must also take into consideration and decide between the different formats such as HD DVD-R for write-once discs, HD DVD-ROM for read-only, and HD DVD-Rewritable for rewritable discs.

After all necessary decisions are made, owners of these state-of-the-art DVD players can revel in the unparalleled picture quality and realistic, booming audio.
